Preschool Adventure has been reviewed over and over again for kids, because its pretty good and clearly targetted at preschool children. Its a bit different in that its really 6 apps in one. When you start it up, you have 6 activites that look like postage stamps, and you can then pick which one to do.
Big-T (3yo) has been playing this app recently. He jumps around between the activities, spending most time in the body parts and matching activities. He did play all of the others originally, but now rarely does colors, shapes, or sounds by himself for example.
One of the other reviews for this app said “it suits young children, as they have short attention spans”. I think this statement is pretty accurate. I suspect this app won’t entertain for long periods of time, but this is not necessarily a problem as there are a lot of other apps out there.
The Application
You choose between 6 activites: Colors, Numbers, Shapes, Body parts, Matching head/torso/legs, and Sounds. The colors activity you touch one of 7 color blotches and it says the color then shows an image (e.g. a fish). The numbers activity is a bit deeper – you touch the numbers in order and it connects the dots to show one of several images (e.g. a puppy dog). Shapes has partially hidden shapes (hiding in lunar craters) which when touched have the shape pop up so you can see it. The body parts activity has a single monkey – you touch the parts and it says them and the slide into position. The matching game allows you to slide the head, torso, and legs to form one of 4 animals (a short animation then plays). Sounds has around 8 images on the screen you touch and get a sound and simple animation (cow, pig, sheep, etc).
The Good
- Good quality.
- Designed specifically for preschoolers.
- Has a bit of variety (different activites).
- The activities have been designed with educational merit in mind.
- Big-T loves the bear animation in the matching game.
The Bad
- The games are pretty shallow.
- I think this game will keep Big-T interested for a week maybe two before he tires of it.
Educational Value
This app teaches a bit in several areas. It does a bit of colors, a bit of numbers, a bit of shapes, a bit body parts, a bit of matching, and a bit of animal sounds. Its good having the variety. It does teach concepts. But each thing it teaches lacks deep variation. This I think will affect how long Big-T will stay interested, but that does not reduce its educational merit.
My Score
4.5 stars. It is a good app for young children (late twos to threes I think is optimal), but there is only so much depth to the app. It may be cheaper to buy this one app instead of 6, but I think finding 6 separate apps will have better depth. I don’t regret buying it, but I think this app has a lot more competition out there than when many of the reviews were first written.
