There are many different drum kit programs out there. “Drum Kit” is probably the most famous of them, appearing on TV and being promoted by Apple (I believe). I remember hearing a story of a large billboard advertising this app.
This app is enjoyed by both my boys (Big-T 3yo, and Little-J 1yo). Its controlled better by Big-T of course, but Little-J loves it too touching away and making noises. They often both have a go together having a grand old time.
Disclaimer: I am using the lite version. I have included the full version above for completeness, but have not used it. The lite version has been good enough to date for my purpose – teaching my young children the idea of different instruments, particularly the idea of percussion being different to other instruments where you can control the tone.
The Application
The screen shows looking down from above a drum kit. You can touch the different drums, cymbals, foot pedals etc to get different percussion sounds.
The Good
- Its got a simple, clean, user interface that is easy to drive – even by my 1yo.
- Unlike real drums, it has a volume control(!)
- It has a range of drums, foot pedals, cymbals etc.
The Bad
- With the kids, its quite hard to get anything other than pure noise out of it. Its not set up to make it easy for a young children to develop a beat and get the idea of the importance of percussion as part of an overall song. This is not surprising – it is just a set of drums. My goal however is to teach concepts to young children, which is not its target audience, which reflects in my rating.
Educational Value
It does teach some percussion concepts and shows there are different sounds that make up percussion. It does not do a good job of making it easy for a young child to develop something like a real drum beat for music. This is not a criticism of the app – it was not the apps intent – but it does reduce my score as suitableness for young children.
My Score
3 stars. Its a nicely done app, but is not designed to teach concepts to children hence for that purpose I am not rating it higher. There are lots of other drum kit apps out there. I would really like to find one that might be less realistic, but provide more guidance to allow young children to do something constructive with it. That is, easily get an end result that sounds like what you might get in a real song. (If you know of such an app, please leave a comment!)
